Adult Literacy Program For ESL classes If you feel you need to better prepare for the exams, you may enroll in GED classes. *The $46.00 payment covers all 5 exams. If you need to retest in a subject area, you will not need to pay the full amount. You may retest up to three times a year in each subject area. What does GED mean? ~GED means General Educational Development. The GED is equivalent to a high school diploma from the United States and its territories. The GED is for persons 18 years or older who have not completed high school. The GED exams measure your knowledge and skills in certain academic fields that are generally learned in high school. Why would I need GED? ~ Many companies are now requiring new employees to have a high school diploma or equivalent. A GED may also open more doors for you to continue your education. Do I need to take GED preparation classes before taking exams? ~ No. It is not necessary to take classes before taking the exams, but the classes can help you prepare for the exams. The classes are free and offered in English. How can I enroll for GED Classes? ~There is no pre-registration. It is on a first come, first serve basis. What will I need? ~An official current picture I.D and/or social security number. Do I need to take all the exams at once? ~ Yes, if you are an initial tester then you may take the exams on the scheduled testing days here at the Houston Community College at the Central campus. The 5 subject test is given in two days. What should I do now? ~ If you are ready to take the GED exams, you need to pay the $46.00 testing fee at the Business Office in 114 San Jac. Building. What happens to students that have taken the GED Test and do not pass? ~ All retesters who are not in GED classes must wait 6 months before re-testing. If a student is enrolled in class, he or she must wait upon recommendation from the professor. If the student is ready to test, the professors will issue a referral within 3 weeks from the last test date.
