Whether
you want to study dance towards a degree, as a passion, or as a pastime,
our program is designed to put technique and discipline at the service
of your creative goals. We offer a full range of classes, from modern,
jazz, ballet, and tap to composition, in a curriculum that has set the
standard for two-year colleges across the state. And we go beyond the
basics with innovative classes in areas such as World Dance, with our
new performance ensemble, and in Anatomy and Kinesiology, with a class
designed to prevent those "unavoidable" injuries.
We are
committed to a strong viable program that serves and challenges dancers,
whether they're planning to complete their degree at a four-year college,
exploring dance for the first time, or returning to school in search
of new creative tools. We stand behind that commitment with an outstanding
faculty of teaching artists, respected professionals in their field.
Beyond
the Classroom
Performance
opportunities? The Central Repertory
Dancers offer a concert every spring featuring new works by Houston
choreographers, and our World Dance Ensemble studies and performs the
dances of ancient traditions from around the globe.
The wealth
of talent drawn to our city provides our students the chance to study
with the leading figures in dance. In recent years, the department has
sponsored workshops, master classes and residencies with companies including
Alvin Ailey, Liz Lerman, José Limón, Soweto Dance Theatre
and the Kirov Ballet. In the summer of 2000, Central launched a new
program, World Dance Houston. This ambitious summer seminar provides
hands-on experience in the dances of ancient disciplines, dances that
have the potential to awaken a new appreciation of traditional cultures,
and to inspire new directions in contemporary choreography.
In The
Community
Central
Dance has been a vital part of the dance community since its inception.
Through our master classes and residencies, Houston dancers of all ages
can experience the best the city has to offer. Our performance home,
the Heinen Theatre, is an elegant, professionally equipped performance
space that serves as a year 'round venue for a host of emerging and
established dance ensembles, among them Houston Metropolitan Dance,
Sandra Organ Dance Company, Psophonia, Suchu, and Texas Tap.
