Class Descriptions
When choosing
a dance class, its important to choose a class appropriate to your skills,
your interest, and your goals. Heres a quick guide to the levels
noted with class descriptions:
Level
I means youre a beginner, no previous experience; everybody
welcome.
Level
II means you remember some basics from that class you took a couple
of years ago, you know the essential concepts.
Level
III means you know the terminology, you are experienced, and perhaps
you have some performance background.

DANC 1210
TAP I

Basic skills and vocabulary of tap dance. Core Curriculum Course.

1213 SUMMER WORKSHOP
Credit: 2 (2 lecture)
Dance technique and repertory of various styles taught by guest artist(s).

1301 DANCE COMPOSITION
Credit: 3 (3 lecture)
Students enrolled in this course are encouraged to expand their movement
vocabulary through various class improvisational assignments. Rhythmical
awareness and visual sensitivity are tested with assorted sound and
visual stimuli. Students participate and perform in group composition
assignments.

1341 BALLET I
Credit: 3 (2 lecture, 2 lab)
This course provides students with a basic understanding of the fundamental
principles of classical ballet technique, encourages students to achieve
a significant level of self discipline and physical control, and instills
an appreciation of the historical contributions of ballet to the overall
development of dance as an art form. May be repeated with department
chair's approval. Core Curriculum Course.

DANC 1345
MODERN DANCE I
Credit: 3 (2 lecture, 2 lab)
An elementary course in basic modern dance technique designed to increase
the movement vocabulary of the beginning dance student. The course includes
basic axial center techniques, locomotor techniques, and combinations
of both. May be repeated with department chair's approval. Core Curriculum
Course.

MODERN DANCE II

DANC 1347
JAZZ DANCE I
Credit: 3 (2 lecture, 2 lab)
A course designed to introduce students to basic skills of jazz dance
with emphasis on general body technique and development, rhythm awareness,
jazz styles, and rhythmic combinations of movement. Core Curriculum
Course.

JAZZ DANCE II
Prerequisite: DANC 1347
Credit: 3 (2 lecture, 2 lab)

DANC 1377
AFRICAN-AMERICAN DANCE I
Credit: 3 (2 lecture, 2 lab)
An elementary course in basic ethnic dance based in the Afro-American
style. Primary movement vocabulary will incorporate techniques of stretching
and strengthening, as well as movement progressions. Through lecture,
film and research, the student will also explore the origins of black
dance, and its development in the United States.

A continuation of DANC 1377.
DANC 1381
WORLD DANCE I
Credit: 3 (2 lecture, 2 lab)
Students will learn cultural dances of five major world civilizations,
with emphasis on rhythmic awareness and movement development. The cultural
origins, significance, and motivation, as well as the use of costumes
and music, will be explored in lecture and
research through live performances, guest artists, and the use of multi-media
sources. Instruction will include experiential and written assignments,
and students will be expected to participate in an end-of-semester concert.
Each time the course is taught, different cultures are examined.

DANC 2301
PROBLEMS IN DANCE
Credit: 3 (3 lecture)
A course designed to meet the individual needs of students who otherwise
have exhibited a particular talent or skill in dance which is not addressed
in any existing dance course. Must have department chair's approval
after recommendation by the instructor. May be repeated.
DANC 2303
DANCE APPRECIATION
Credit: 3 (3 lecture)
Survey of primitive, classical, and contemporary dance and its interrelationship
with cultural developments and other art forms. Core Curriculum Course.
DANC 2325
ANATOMY AND KINESIOLOGY
Prerequisite: Program approval
Credit: 3 (3 lecture)
The study of human movement designed specifically to relate to dance.
The course will cover the skeletal, nervous, and muscular systems. Studies
include movement analysis, therapeutic exercises, and prevention of
dance injuries.

A continuation of DANC 1342 with an emphasis on developing strength,
control, and flexibility for a more difficult technique vocabulary in
classical ballet. May be repeated with department chair's approval.

DANC 2345
MODERN DANCE III
Credit: 3 (2 lecture, 2 lab)
A continuation of the beginning modern dance technique course DANC 1346.
Students are expected to demonstrate an understanding of correct physiological
alignment in several schools of modern dance technique. May be repeated
with department chair's approval.

PERFORMANCE III

This course offers students the opportunity to engage in rehearsal and
performance of dance works in the making under the direction of faculty
or guest choreographers. May be repeated with department chair's approval.
