On
Stage at Central
At Central
Drama, small classes and an ambitious production schedule ensure our
students a range of experience that will serve them well. Whether you
plan to transfer to the drama program of a four-year college, or you're
exploring a new challenge, our goal is to provide the hands-on experience,
technique, and discipline to support your creative energy.
Our faculty
is made up of working artists, respected professionals on the Houston
theatre scene. The curriculum runs the gamut from introductory classes
to advanced courses focusing on specialized areas, such as musical theatre
and acting for TV.
The production
schedule includes musical comedies, contemporary dramas, and classics
of world theatre. We're especially proud of our record of producing
new works by local writers. We're building the future of the field by
nurturing new writers and engaging students in the collaborative process
of bringing a new work to the stage.
Beyond The Classroom
We've been a vital part of Houston's theatre community for 25
years. Creative partnerships with the Ensemble, the University of St.
Thomas, Talento Bilingue, Kuumba House. Theater LaB, and the Alley Theater
enrich our program through co-productions, mentoring, and internships.
Central
Drama offers the well-equipped performance spaces that mark a real commitment
to theatre training. Theatre One is a flexible space, an intimate black-box
theatre seating up to 120 for events ranging from poetry readings to
musicals. The Heinen Theatre is an elegant traditional proscenium house
that seats 300. A registered National Landmark, the Heinen
hosts our large scale productions, and its a favorite space for Houston's
performing arts companies.
