Music
Central
Music Central
pursues twin missions, both designed to produce creative participants
and critical observers in the field of music. First, we prepare music
students for successful transfer to four-year institutions. Second,
we help students from all backgrounds explore their creativity, whether
through introduction to great music, instruction in instrumental or
vocal performance, or the study of theory and composition.
We offer
a full schedule of classes, from music appreciation to advanced theory
and jazz improv, including ensemble and performance courses. The curriculum
is supplemented by a range of private
vocal and instrumental classes. The teaching artists
of our faculty are working professionals, and you'll find performers
from every major ensemble in the city in our classrooms.
Classes
are offered at Central's Fine Arts Center, a three-building complex
that encompasses private and ensemble practice rooms, recital halls,
a piano lab, and two theatres. Our electronic piano lab not only serves
piano students, its advanced technology gives wings to the imagination
of students in our composition and theory program.
Beyond
the Classroom
Performance
is a critical element of a musician's education. Music Central collaborates
with the drama department on musicals, offering both voice and instrumental
students a chance to shine. Clarinet choirs, guitar ensembles, chamber
ensembles, all offer regular recitals, and our resident big band,
Texas
Jazz Central, plays at venues all over the city. We
recognize that music from distant cultures can enlighten and inspire,
and a busy schedule of events at the Heinen Theatre brings students
music from every corner of the globe.
Through the department's Artist in Residence program, students can work
with and observe professional musicians in the process of creating,
rehearsing and performing. Opera
To Go, Houston Grand Opera's touring wing, is a long-time
partner in the program. This fruitful collaboration involving faculty,
students, and one of the world's great opera companies has resulted
in five world premieres rehearsed and produced on our campus.
